EN 1090 — What it is & what it covers
BS EN 1090-1:2009+A1:2011 · BS EN 1090-2:2008+A1:2011
What it is
EN 1090 is the European standard for the execution of steel and aluminium structures:
EN 1090-1 (conformity assessment of components — the CE-marking route), EN 1090-2 (technical requirements for steel), EN 1090-3 (aluminium). 1090-1 Intro & Clause 2What Part 1 covers
EN 1090-1 specifies conformity assessment of performance characteristics for structural steel and aluminium components and kits placed on the market as construction products — manufacturing characteristics and, where relevant, structural design characteristics. 1090-1 Clause 1
What Part 2 covers
EN 1090-2 specifies requirements for execution of structural steelwork (steel up to grade
S690; cold-formed up to S700; up to S960 with extra conditions). It applies to structures designed to EN 1993, and steel parts of composite structures to EN 1994. All requirements are expressed in terms of execution classes. 1090-2 Clause 1What Part 1 does NOT do
Part 1 contains no design or manufacture rules. Design comes from the Eurocodes; execution from 1090-2 / 1090-3. 1090-1 Introduction
Added context added
CE marking is the manufacturer's declaration that a product meets EU requirements so it can be placed on the European market. EN 1090-1 is the harmonised standard that enables it for structural steelwork, prepared under EU Mandate M/120. added
The Eurocode family
EN 1990 basis of design; EN 1991 loads; EN 1993 steel; EN 1994 composite; EN 1998 earthquake; EN 1999 aluminium. 1090-1 Clause 2❯ Where do the design and execution rules come from, if not EN 1090-1?
Design from the Eurocodes (EN 1990/1991/1993/1994/1998/1999); execution from EN 1090-2 (steel) and EN 1090-3 (aluminium). EN 1090-1 only handles conformity assessment / CE marking.

Guided study + 20-question exam
Go through the six modules with spoken narration, check yourself as you go, then take a 20-question exam that ramps from easy to hard. For each exam question you type your answer and an AI examiner grades it against the model answer — judging meaning, not wording — with a short note on what you got and what you missed. You can override any grade. Your final grade is tallied at the end. Turn narration on in the bar above to hear it read aloud.
Your name, email and exam results are sent to your lecturer when you finish.
